The young lady peeks out of her room, making sure there were no guards around. Quietly, she makes her way out of her room, closing the door softly behind her. The sound of her footsteps echoes through the palace halls.
Her night's escape didn't seem to last long though, as just seconds later, she is caught. And where do you think you're going, milady? The young lady freezes in her spot, turning around, to see her royal guard standing just a couple feet behind her, arms crossed and an unimpressed look on his face.
You know you're instructed to stay in your room during the night. So what do you think you're doing out here? You want to stroll in the garden because you can't sleep? With all due respect milady, it has been told me by the Duke, your father, that no one is allowed to venture into the night, and that includes you, your brother, and your sister as well.
No, just because we're childhood friends, it doesn't mean that I am willing to bend the Duke's orders for you. Come now, milady, I will be escorting you back to your room. I.
.. I am sorry, but how do you know about that? I swear I will kill them the next time I see them.
Fine, if I take you out on a walk through the garden, promise me you won't tell the captain about it. And don't give me that smug look. If we end up getting caught, I am fully blaming you and claiming blackmail.
Sure, keep telling yourself that. This is the first and only time I will be doing this for you. And don't give me that puppy eyes.
Let's go. And as they move through the castle, the knight notices the light skip in the young lady's step once they arrive at the gardens. Why aren't you happy with yourself? Oh, I do not know, maybe it's because of the small skip in your step that gave it away? Okay, whatever you say, milady.
Well I could use your name, yes, but it would still be improper, even if we are alone. But I guess it is not stopping me from calling you by your nickname. Starlight.
What, I can't call you Starlight all of a sudden? If I remember correctly, you liked when I called you that when we were younger. Hey, not very ladylike to eat your card like that, Starlight.
It is only fair, since you are practically doing the same with me. Keep telling yourself that. So, here we are.
Remember, we can't stay out here for long, okay? And don't go around making too much noise. We don't want the whole castle to hear us now, do we? Good girl.
The knight watches as the young lady jogs over to the fountain, crouching down to allow her fingers to graze across the surface of the water. A look of fondness on his face. She is still the same as ever, persistent and stubborn as ever, but also kind and gentle.
To think it has been nearly twenty years since we first met at this very spot. I was just a knight's apprentice at the time, and I got lost in the palace gardens. That's when I came across the young lady, the young lord.
Her smile, her smile is what drew me to her then and now as well. From that day, I swore to protect her with all my life. Hmm? Is there something wrong, lady? Did you get hurt? Oh.
No, I'm alright. Just deep in thought. I thought you didn't like it when I called you Starlight.
Alright, alright, I will stop. So, you said you were having trouble sleeping, right? Come, let's sit under the tree over there and look at the stars.
It's something I do when I can't sleep. Here, let me place my cloak on the ground for you, and sit next to me. No, not all the time.
Just when I have a lot on my mind and need a quiet place to be. I know, I didn't say that. Don't be putting words in my mouth.
I'm not saying that I don't like being around them, but they can be a handful of times. Me lady, there are no breaks when you're a royal guard. Protecting you and the city, those are my first priorities.
Are you alright? I apologize if I said anything that made you uncomfortable, I didn't mean… I see, so that's what's been on your mind lately. If you want to, would you like to talk about it? It might help.
The princess opens up about her worries, not only for her family, for the city, but for the safety of the royal guards as well. She's afraid for those she cares about, for her knight. Do you trust me? Then trust in your royal guards, trust in me.
We will do anything in our power to stop the creed. I can't promise on behalf of everyone that we will come out of it unscathed, nor that all of us will come out of it alive. But there is nothing for you to worry about.
We will protect you, your family, and the city. You shouldn't have to worry about this. Making sure you stay alive is what matters the most.
Leave the fighting to us. As your personal knight, it is my duty to protect you, and if sacrificing my life in order to keep you safe is what I have to do, then I… Milady, what are you… The knight becomes only more stunned as the young lady confesses her love, as she leans against him, crying a little. You don't really mean that.
The silence she gives him is deafening, as she was indeed telling the truth. I… you really do mean it, don't you? I'm sorry, it's just… it's really hard to believe this.
No, no, of course not. That is not what I am saying at all, please. It is the opposite, actually.
The whole reason I was all bent on becoming her personal knight when we were younger is because I wanted to be closer to you. In all honesty, I fell in love with you, too. The knight cups her face in his hands, giving her a gentle smile.
Is it really so hard to believe that, darling? The knight leans in to kiss her, but pulls back a second later, leaving the young lady confused. No, not yet.
At least, not now. Oh, trust me, Starlight. You do not know how badly I want to kiss you, trust me.
But now… now is not the right time, especially with what is going on. I don't want to risk your life any more than it is now. So I humbly ask if you can wait for me just a little while longer.
And once everything is done and over with, then I will properly court you. I promise. You know I cannot promise that, darling.
But that… that doesn't mean that I will not try for your sake. And so, after their declaration of love, the pair kept watching the stars for just a little while longer. Well then, we best be heading back to your room.
We have been out long enough. Much longer and, well, there is no doubt that they will find that you are missing from your room and I am missing from my post. And that… that would be trouble.
Here, take my hand. If you begin to grow tired, let me know. I am more than happy to carry you on my back as you sleep.
My darling starlight.
