Oh, I didn't even realize it was so late. The sun's already setting. Oh, hey.

Yeah, yeah, I know it's late. I got so caught up with, well, you know how I can be. Hmm? What am I doing? Well, I'm sitting.

Come join me. There's plenty of room on this porch for the both of us. Yeah, I was working on some assignments and I got pretty caught up.

I finished the assignment I was working on, so good to that. Um, but then, being the little overachiever that I am, I started working on another and, well, we can both see how that went. I didn't even pay attention to how long I was working, but it was a long time because the sun was definitely not setting.

What about you? You had work to get done today too, didn't you? Were you able to finish? That's great.

Good job. Hmm? No, yeah, I was just working a lot earlier and I'm just happy to be home now.

You want to know something? It's been a really long time since I've just sat and enjoyed the sunset. Hmm? I used to watch it a lot.

At least I was more active with it, but, you know, as I got older, I just didn't take the time out for it anymore. Or I don't notice it. So, when I do, I just try to take a second to be present, I guess.

Enough about me. Have you ever watched a sunset? Really now? I guess that means you have the perfect roomie then.

After all, not to toot my own horn, I am a certified sunset watcher. Hey, don't laugh at me. It's true.

Unlike someone, I have gazed upon the skies as the sun dips below the horizon. Ah, you want to know why I took on such a prestigious profession? Well, back in the olden days.

Okay, okay, I'll stop. You know, I don't remember exactly what age I was. Probably about 9 or 10, maybe 11.

Who knows? It was such a long time ago. I just love being outside.

There was so much that I loved about it. The excitement from chasing lightning bugs. That's what I grew up calling them.

What did you call them? Hmm, I see. Yeah, it's really interesting.

You know, different cultures, where we grew up, where we live. You know, it's like, it's kind of how like some people call it soda and others call it pop. Yeah.

And there was that one familiar chirping of those bugs. I can't remember the name. I think it starts with a C.

Cicadas. Yes, thank you. I even love the mosquitoes.

Okay, yeah, that sounds crazy. That's fair. Well, I didn't love the itchiness when they would bite, but I loved having to run around being barefoot.

The grass blades poking me, the soft dirt between my toes. And that was, you know, all those things just made up the cake of what I loved about being outside at night. The cherry on top, though, was watching the sunset.

You know, I remember there were times when it would just be me outside and I would go out there with my sketchbook and I would just draw and I could hear the crickets and I would see the lightning bugs and I would just sit on the porch and I would watch as the day faded into the night. And there was something so calming about it. But I've said all of that to say sunsets have a really special place in my heart.

They kind of just take me back to the innocence and wonder of my childhood, being outside at night with my friends, my siblings. Those held some of my best memories. I've come to realize over the years that we don't take time out for those things that brought us joy as we get older.

We don't appreciate them as much. And it's understandable. We have all these different responsibilities.

They're important responsibilities, yes. But we don't take the time to appreciate the little things, like just simply watching the sunset. Okay, so I'm going to say something that's a little out there.

Yeah. Actually, don't look at me. No, I'm serious.

Don't look at me when I tell you. Yes, turn your head. Turn around.

There we go. Thank you. But you're kind of like.

.. No, no, no. I shouldn't say it.

I shouldn't say it. Fine, fine. Okay, I'll say it.

You're kind of like sunsets for me. You're laughing. You said you wouldn't laugh.

Okay. Okay, true. You didn't actually say that.

But still. Okay, okay. I'll explain.

Let's just take a second to compose ourselves. What I meant to say was, watching the sunset reminds me of that freedom, the peacefulness, everything I had as a kid, the nostalgia, all of it. Sunsets remind me to take a second, to be present, to not be so concerned with everything else in the world.

And you do that for me. Now, you're not the sun, even though you sometimes make my days instantly brighten up. But you're like sunsets because you do those exact things for me.

You remind me to take a breath and that there's nothing wrong with it. You remind me it's okay to be present, to be in the moment, to just not worry about everything in the world that I don't need to worry about. I really appreciate you for that.

I appreciate that you do that for me. So, yeah. You're like sunsets for me.

Yeah, no, I know. I wasn't expecting to come home and be so sappy. But here we are.

I think it's just, I didn't have a bad day, per se. But I was kind of stressed out over my assignments. And I spent so much time and energy working on them.

I was working my butt off in that library. And I spent hours frying my brain. And yet, when I finished and I was on the way home, I was just concerned with things that I don't need to be concerned about.

So, coming home and seeing you and watching the sunset with you, it's just instant calm. You're very calming, you know. That reminds me, I've been wondering something about you lately.

Hmm? Would you like to know? Very well, then.

I shall let you privy to that information. I think that you've, drumroll please, secretly dabbled in the arcane arts, the secret arts of witchcraft. Yeah, yeah, you have.

You totally have. You've dabbled in some type of magic, wizardry, witchy, warlocky, whatever you want to call it. You have to possess some mystical abilities because there is no way that you're so calming and caring and practically perfect.

There's just no way. I mean, you might even be an alien. Who knows? I mean, look, that's probably why I'm so madly in love with you.

Um, no, no, no. I didn't mean that. I don't love you.

Like, at all. Okay, that doesn't sound great. What I mean is, I don't love you.

Okay, okay, not great again. Okay, just take a second. Breathe.

Sorry, let me start over. I'm just saying all the wrong things over and over again. What I meant to say was that I really care about you.

And I know that you care about me too. We both care about each other. I'm sure that's something we know.

But I think that maybe there's something here between us. I think that maybe it's not just me. Maybe it's you too who feels this way.

Maybe. I mean, you know how our friends are. They tease us about it all the time.

How they're convinced that we'll be together one day. And I know there's always been that little inkling with us, you know? To be frank, since moving in together, we've gotten really close.

And that makes me very, very happy. I don't know. If I'm wrong, then please correct me.

But it's not just me, right? Oh, you do? Well, I don't mean to sound so shocked.

I did just say that I thought you felt the same. But to actually hear you say it? Wow.

Yeah, yeah, no. I'm laughing because you're laughing. And in case you didn't know, you have a very wonderful laugh.

I mean, who would've thought that tonight would go this way? What with me being all sappy and telling you how much you mean to me, then progressing to me accidentally confessing to you, and then you confessing back to me. Just bewildering.

Bewildering, bewitching, um, very mind-boggling. Yes, mind-boggling is the right word. Wait, do you smell that? No, I am not changing the subject.

That's your thing, remember? Do you really not smell it? Yeah, it smells like it's about to rain.

What? No, it totally has a smell. Do you not, oh my goodness, do you not know the smell? There is a very distinct smell that everyone smells when it's about to rain, and you're seriously telling me that you don't know this very, and emphasis on the very, distinct smell.

You know what? I take it back that I love you. Yep, I don't love you.

At all. Why? Well, for starters, you've never watched the sunset.

Red flag, number one. Okay, not a red flag, but still, okay? You should've at least watched the sunset one time in your life, okay? Number two, you don't know the smell of when it's about to rain.

You know, I, everybody knows that smell. You know, I'm starting to think you really are an alien. Yeah.

No, no, there is a smell. It is 100% going to rain, and you're going to be so shocked when it does, because guess what? There is a smell.

How about this? We place a bet. Mm-hmm, you heard me, a bet.

What are we wagering, you ask? If it rains and I win, then you have to go on a date with me. Mm-hmm, a date.

And if you win, if you win, you also get to go on a date with me. Because, I mean, come on, have you met me? Total catch over here.

Yeah, look, hey, I'm pretty awesome, if I do say so myself, and I definitely say so. Yeah, yeah, just look at me, mm-hmm. Go ahead and get a good look.

I'm total catch, right? You know, you can just get a fishing rod. Fishing rod, yeah, you reel me in, you know, I'm just such a catch, right? You would have the best time ever.

Mm-hmm, it would be a wonderful prize for you, a wonderful winner prize for you, because I'm just that amazing, you know? I'm kidding, I'm kidding. Hmm? Oh, nothing, it's just nice being with you, being able to laugh after having such a rough day.
